The Macao Foundation (FM) has released the English- and Portuguese-language versions of a Chinese-language book about Macau’s history and culture, with the aim of making it more widely accessible to non-Chinese readers, according to a statement by the public foundation yesterday.
Originally published in Chinese in 2022, the history book was written by young local scholars Alex Chan Lek Hang (陳力行), Alex Lou Ka U (勞加裕) and Sio Kit Meng (蕭潔銘), the statement noted. Arranged chronologically into five parts and 20 chapters, it traces Macau’s historical development from the Stone Age* to 1945, the statement added.
A Journey Through Time: A Brief History of Macao is the title of the English-language version.
The Chinese edition has sold more than 3,500 copies and entered its third print, the statement noted, adding that the book uses illustrations to introduce local history and promote cultural understanding among younger generations.
The English edition was translated by a local scholar Chan Chan U (陳震宇), the statement said, while the title of the Portuguese-language version is Esta Cidadezinha ao Longo do Tempo – Uma Introdução Simples à História de Macau (“This Little City Over Time – A Simple Introduction to the History of Macao”), which was translated by Mu Shuang (母爽), a master’s degree holder from the University of Macau’s (UM) Department of Portuguese. It was reviewed by Prof. Giorgio Sinedino, director of the Centre for Bilingual Teaching and Training in Chinese and Portuguese at UM’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
The book’s original Chinese title 澳門歷史讀本：小城的時光之旅 literally translates as “Macao History Reader: A Journey Through the Small City’s Time”.
The foundation noted in its statement that the translations aim to overcome linguistic and cultural barriers and strengthen the international communication of Macau’s historical and cultural heritage, underlining that both editions cost 50 patacas each and are available at selected local bookstores, with a promotion campaign on major campuses planned soon.
